Wow, what a ride it’s been! Just a little while ago, I took a huge leap by leaving my previous job to dive headfirst into something I’ve always been passionate about—coding. It wasn’t easy, but it felt like the right path for me. After tons of self-learning, challenges, and exploring the ins and outs of the tech world, something even better came my way: the opportunity to become a Happiness Engineer at Automattic.
For those of you unfamiliar with it, Happiness Engineers are the lifeline for WordPress.com users. We’re there to help people with everything from troubleshooting problems to helping them make their websites and blogs truly shine. It’s a job title that seems lighthearted, but the work is serious—we support millions of users across the globe every single day.
So, how did I end up here? Well, it started with the desire to do something that truly excited me. I wanted to be in a role where I could combine my love for problem-solving with a more people-focused approach. The idea of joining Automattic, the team behind WordPress.com, WooCommerce, and so many other amazing products, felt like the perfect blend of everything I was looking for: creativity, community, and tech.
But getting here wasn’t a walk in the park. Automattic doesn’t just hire anyone—you go through a trial process where your skills and ability to interact with customers are put to the test. It’s intense, but that’s because being a Happiness Engineer means mastering WordPress inside and out, understanding how to truly help people, and, above all, caring about every single interaction.
The best part? Now that I’m here, I get to be part of a global team of awesome people, all working together across different time zones and continents. It’s wild to think that someone in Portugal (me!) can work with people from dozens of countries, all contributing to the same mission. And I’m loving every moment of it.
Working at Automattic feels like the dream mix—learning new things daily, facing challenges, and getting to make a real impact on how people experience WordPress. The community aspect is also a big part of what makes it exciting—both our internal team and the incredible users we work with every day.
Looking back, this journey has been about trusting the process, embracing uncertainty, and going after what truly makes me tick. Now, as I settle into this role, I can’t wait to see what’s next. I’m still as curious and passionate as I was when I first started learning to code, and now I get to bring that energy to something bigger.
